Nova Scotia’s Lobster Made Easy ‘pivots’ after Hurricane Set Back, Lands in Toronto for Holidays12/19/2022 December 14, 2022 – Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia
After enduring stormy seas following their reveal and debut on CBC’s Dragons’ Den in September, Nova Scotia’s Lobster Made Easy has been pivoting, thinking outside the pot. Banding together, they’ve landed themselves a couple of unique locations and are launching new products, just in time for the Holiday Season. Good on their promise, Lobster Made Easy, is now making it easy for lobster lovers in Toronto and Halifax, to enjoy lobster in their homes. Following the airing of Dragons’ Den on September 15th, Mark Lowe, CEO and Founder of Lobster Made Easy, says he was overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of support, demand and appetite for their signature product, east coast landed, microwavable frozen, pre-streamed, whole lobster. “From coast to coast in Canada and even from the US, the volume of emails and messages we received was overwhelming,” says Lowe, “everyone wanted to know when our lobster would be available in their neighbourhood grocery store. It was very exciting.” Momentum was building, plans unfolding, and then Hurricane Fiona struck. There’s not a lot that can take the wind out of Lowe’s sails, but when his partnering lobster supplying company, Victoria Co-operative Fisheries Ltd. based in Neil’s Harbour, Cape Breton, literally had their foundation ripped out from under them, it was an unexpected set back. While officials in Neil’s Harbour reassured Lowe they would be back in operation by spring 2023 to prepare and pack Lowe’s microwavable lobster was great news, it fell well short of the deadline to be ready for Christmas, as originally planned. Determined to keep the momentum rolling, Lowe ‘pivoted’, as he has always done with his businesses, literally ‘thinking outside the pot’, again. With the Holiday Season approaching, Lowe pivoted indeed. Setting out to leverage their mobile lobster trailer and signature Lobster Roll product he’d created and had been selling from their Mahone Bay location, this fall they popped up at the Halifax Seaport Market and Saltscapes Harvest Greets the Holidays Expo, with great success. It was November when Lobster Made Easy caught the eye of the famous, and popular, Distillery District in Toronto. Taking them up on their invitation, with less than two weeks to prepare, on November 17h, Lobster Made Easy opened their ‘Lobster Shack’ within the 2022 Distillery Winter Village, the only east coast and lobster serving vendor among the collection of 22 seasonal vendors. Lowe says it’s been interesting in Toronto, suggesting they are an anomaly. “Guests of the Winter Village have been curious, and even a little hesitant. They’re not used to having direct access to quality Nova Scotia Lobster in Toronto, and served by a Nova Scotia company”, says Lowe. “When they realize we’re legitimate, serving ‘real’, delicious lobster, they are thrilled.” The Toronto experience has been full of surprises says Lowe, and it started on opening-eve. Gathering for the mandatory Health and Safety Meeting, all of the seasonal vendors received an early Christmas gift from Google, a $10,000.00 contribution to support operational costs within the Market. Starting from scratch in Toronto, Lowe says it certainly was welcomed and appreciated. Now established, they are part of the Winter Village until New Year’s Eve. In Halifax, Lowe has set up shop at the Evergreen Festival on the waterfront, which is now in their final week. Located within the Evergreen Market is nestled among a collection of light installations along the waterfront boardwalk. Unlike the Toronto Market, it’s an all-Nova Scotia line up of businesses, small, unique local businesses. Proudly serving their signature lobster rolls, this location also offers a snow crab roll infused with locally sourced, Hot Under the Kilt seasoning from Chef Alain Bosse, The Kilted Chef. True to their commitment to making lobster easy to enjoy, Lowe says, given the demand and interest, just in time for the Holidays they have launched a new product, Lobster Made Easy lobster packs to be enjoyed at home. Available as 1lb and 2lbs packs of frozen, cooked, Nova Scotia lobster claws and knuckles, it’s the same lobster they use in their Lobster Made Easy lobster rolls. Once again, Lowe says it was another pivot for the new business. Three months after the airing of their segment on Dragons’ Den, inquiries are rolling in asking where they can pick-up their microwavable lobster. “There’s nothing worse in business than creating demand, and not have the product to meet it,” says Lowe. “Given how much folks have enjoyed the lobster we serve within our lobster rolls, I realized we could in fact provide our unique packaged lobster itself, honouring our mission to make local Nova Scotia lobster easy to get and enjoy at home now - just in a different way.” Lobster Made Easy will continue serving their signature lobster rolls at the Distillery Winter Village in Toronto, Evergreen Festival in Halifax and now with the launch of a new online ordering, customers wanting lobster for the holidays can pick it up and take it home from locations in Toronto, Halifax and Mahone Bay. This small, Nova Scotia locally owned, company definitely continues to live by its motto, “think outside the pot” and making lobster easy to enjoy. Lobster Made Easy had the pleasure of attending the Saltscapes 'Harvest Greets The Holiday's' Expo... WE HAD SO MUCH FUN! Sharing the stage demonstrating our microwavable whole in the shell lobster with the Kilted Chef himself Alain Bossé was a blast, and the best part was seeing the reactions from the crowd as they sank their claws in for a taste test! All smiles here!
For Immediate Release Sept. 15th, 2022 Lobster Made Easy coming to a Microwave near you! Mahone Bay based company thinks outside the pot – attracts Dragons’ Den Deal
(Mahone Bay, NS) – Hosting a lobster boil or simply serving some up for close family can be a very messy and involved affair. Typically, preparing the popular culinary crustacean is limited to those with a moderately sized kitchen or those who have the capacity to cook outdoors to avoid the lingering smell. Not everyone has access to those amenities, and you don’t need them anymore. A new product coming to market has revolutionized the way everyone can enjoy this signature Maritime cuisine on-demand and without the mess. Mark Lowe, founder of Lobster Made Easy has made preparing lobster, easy and convenient. Placed in a standard microwave, in under 6 minutes, a whole pre-cooked frozen lobster in the shell is ready to be enjoyed. It’s a product he’s proud to be introducing following extensive research, development and testing. “Our family loves lobster however, a few years ago when my wife insisted that I couldn’t cook it in the house, an idea sparked in that moment,” said Lowe of his quest to innovate product availability and packaging. “It has been something that we have been working on for a number of years – there is a balance required from pre-cooking and brine content to the surface area of the packaging that is the secret to Lobster Made Easy.” ‘Thinking outside the pot’, literally, hard work and collaborations have paid off as Lowe was featured this week on the popular CBC series Dragons’ Den where the hosts raved about the product. Several Dragons offered deals with Lowe ultimately accepting Arlene Dickenson’s offer. “She has a long and storied history in food production, service and supply chain channels, her excitement about the quality of the product spoke volumes to me as an entrepreneur,” said Lowe. Production partner and harvester, Osborne Burke, General Manager of the Cape Breton-based Victoria Co-operative Fisheries Ltd commented on the product and deal, “As a locally owned co-op since 1955 that processes and prepares lobster with 65 years experience, working with LME has been a match made in heaven. Through their product testing and research Mark and his team have developed the capacity to bring the incomparable experience of a fresh lobster dinner direct from the harvester to the consumer, so conveniently, we could not be more excited to be part of this journey.” Matt d'Entremont, Director of Nova Scotia Product Design and Development Centre at Dalhousie University says they’re proud to play a part in helping Mark achieve his LME vision achieving the highest level of precision for packaging, ensuring the quality of the product. “Among the many projects we’ve taken on at the Nova Scotia Product Design and Development Centre, 14 have involved lobster. Without question, Mark’s novel innovative product is certainly the tastiest. The LME sous vide product has been uniquely engineered enabling consumers to enjoy a quality lobster experience, without the mess” says d’Entremont. Industry has also endorsed Lobster Made Easy. Dwayne Boudreau, Brand Specialist with Food & Beverage Atlantic, says “Incredibly, LME combines the experience of eating a fresh Nova Scotia lobster with the convenience of freezer to microwave! LME has revolutionized lobster cooking forever – now everyone, everywhere will enjoy a perfectly cooked Maritime lobster as if at a traditional lobster boil.” Locally, Lowe says their Lobster Made Easy whole lobster, along with their signature lobster rolls and crab rolls, are available from their shop in Mahone Bay, and they’ll be popping-up in Halifax with their 27’ Lobster-trailer at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market on weekends starting September 24-25, and special events like Saltscapes Harvest Greets the Holidays in October, and the Evergreen Festival in December. With export plans well in hand, by Christmas you’ll see Lobster Made Easy available from Sobeys, and even sooner online directly from LME. Lowe is also in discussions with the food service industry in Canada, and internationally, with sights set on growth. Meanwhile, Lowe says he and Dickenson are working through their due diligence and hopes to make an announcement soon. Reflecting on his appearance on Dragons’ Den, he says he’s grateful for having had the opportunity to pitch to the Dragons, the experience has left him even more convinced he’s got an incredible product that he’s proud to present in the market, from home - Nova Scotia. Working through NSBI, under their Productivity and Innovation Voucher program, Lobster Made Easy worked to develop packaging that would enable us to deliver a quality product to the consumer that they could easily prepare, reliably. Much of the technology needed had never been applied to seafood, let alone lobster. Matt d'Entremont, Director of Nova Scotia Product Design and Development Centre at Dalhousie University says they’re proud to have played a part in helping Mark achieve his LME vision achieving the highest level of precision for packaging, ensuring the quality of the product. The Nova Scotia Product Design and Development Centre provides entrepreneurs and SMEs with access to a complete product R&D group to discover and develop ideas from concept to pre-production prototypes. They provide entrepreneurs with a spectrum services from basic consulting, discovery, ideation, concept design, rapid prototyping, testing, detailed design, pre-production designs for contract manufacturing, and even some small-scale production. When was the last time you went to the grocery to buy live chicken, bring it home, kill it, pluck it and cook it? No one does that anymore! So why should you still be doing that with live lobster?
That’s why we brought you Lobster Made Easy. Lobster Made Easy is frozen whole cooked lobster that you can pick up from your favourite store, take home to keep in your freezer till whenever you want it. And when you desire you can simply bring it out of the freezer, microwave on high for less than 6 minutes. Lobster Made Easy saves you all the stress, mess and foul odour associated with cooking lobster at home. It is easy and fast to prepare no matter your culinary skill level and you do not have to take your loved ones to an expensive restaurant anymore to enjoy a fancy dinner. Simply pop the "trap" into the microwave and cook until the steam pouch fully expands (not more than 6 minutes), remove from the microwave, cut the pouch, drain the brine, and enjoy! Traditionally, lobster traps are made of curved pieces of wood, wood laths, and nylon twine. We decided to bring alive that interesting part of the lobster fishing heritage of the North Atlantic from where we source our lobster. So, we created a special design for our packaging, a miniature lobster trap, to show you how committed we are to bringing you the freshest and tastiest lobster from the pristine waters of Nova Scotia. Straight from a Lobster Trap! Right to your dining table! We are excited to announce that Lobster Made Easy will be available in Sobeys stores soon. This followed the successful pitching of our Lobster Made Easy frozen microwavable whole cooked lobster to executives at Sobeys, Canada’s second largest food retailer in November.
Following the pitch, Lobster Made Easy was selected among new products to be showcased in regional Sobeys stores. To enjoy great tasting lobster, you no longer need to go to a restaurant to pay for a fancy dinner. Simply pick up Lobster Made Easy from your favourite grocery store, pop the "lobster trap" into the microwave and cook until the steam pouch fully expands (not more than 6 minutes), remove from the microwave, cut the pouch, drain the brine, and enjoy! We are pleased to announce that Lobster Made Easy Inc has been accepted into the 2021 cohort of the New York based Food Future Accelerator program.
